Abstract
161,266. Radio Communication Co., Ltd., and Binyon, B. Jan. 3, 1920. Discharge-gap apparatus.-Relates to means for preventing leakage of air into the are chamber of an oscillation generator during periods of inaction of the arc, and consists in the use of an auxiliary vaporizer which is independent of the arc and becomes operative to maintain the requisite pressure of hydrocarbon vapour whenever the pressure in the are chamber falls below normal. An independent heating-device may be employed to maintain the temperature of the arc chamber when the arc is not in use. As shown in Fig. 1, a fall of pressure in the arc chamber A causes alcohol or other liquid hydrocarbon to be fed along a pipe C on to a heating-coil B. A feed-device D and non-return valve F are employed. Alternatively the vaporizing-coil may be in a chamber communicating on the one hand with the alcohol supply and on the other hand through a non- return valve and a constricted pipe with the arc chamber, in which a heating-coil maintains the temperature during periods of disuse of the arc and prevents condensations. The heating-coil may be continual'y operative or may be switched in only when the arc is quenched. The coil B, Fig. 1, may be used for vaporizing during the normal working of the arc, in which case a dripfeed device delivers the hydrocarbon to the coil at a rate depending on the pressure in the chamber. A tap may be fitted for cutting off the dripfeed when the arc is out of operation.
