Abstract

689,403. Welding by pressure. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Aug. 31, 1951 [Sept. 1, 1950], No. 21619/50. Class 83 (iv). In a resistance welding machine of the kind having a removable welding electrode mounted in a holder and supplied with cooling fluid, valve means are provided within the holder which operate automatically to seal the holder against escape of cooling fluid when the electrode is removed therefrom. A valve 4 is loaded by a spring 5 so that, when the electrode 2 is removed it moves outwards against a stop 10 to seal cooling water inlet and outlet ports 6, 9. The electrode 2 is taper fitted into the holder 1. In a modification the valve is biased by pressure of the fluid itself, for example by feeding it to the end surface of the valve. The cooling may be gas.
