Abstract

820,308. Cooling cutting tools. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 27, 1956 [Feb. 25, 1955], No. 5681/55. Class 83 (3). The cutting-edges of tools such as lathe-tools, drills and milling-cutters are cooled by supplying a liquid coolant, such as carbon dioxide, intermittently through a tube or bore, or through the interstices of a sintered metal plug, the tube or bore and the grain-size of the sintered particles being such that the liquid coolant does not freeze and prevent the intermittent passage of coolant therethrough. A lathe-tool 1, Fig. 2, may have a hard-metal tip 2a and a plug 11 of sintered material at the end of a bore 2. A tube 7 within the bore delivers carbon dioxide to pass through the interstices of the plug and out through passages 3, 4, to the tool-faces. The tube 7 may have a reduced end, and the sintered plug is then omitted. An intermittent feed of coolant to the tool is provided in a lathe by arranging a cam on the end of the work-spindle to operate a lever and a flexible cable to open and close a valve in the coolant supply line intermittently as the spindle rotates. Drilling.-A drill 21, Fig. 3, is provided with orifices 22, 23, 25 for supplying carbon dioxide to the cutting-point. The drill is carried in a check 15 secured to the machine-spindle, which has a central coolant delivery passage 19 connecting with the drill passage 21 through a packing-ring 43. Carbon dioxide is led in through a non-rotating member 38 and slipring arrangement to the face of the spindle head 26. As the latter rotates, a ball-valve 30 passes under a cam-portion 42 on the stationary parts and is thus depressed intermittently against the pressure of a spring 31 to allow liquid carbon dioxide to flow along passages 27, 32, 19 to the drill. Milling.-A milling-cutter with four arms 45, Fig. 4, and cutting-edges 46, has passages 47 in the arms supplied with liquid carbon dioxide from a tube in a hollow supporting arbor. Ball-valves 49 are provided behind each cutting-tip, and when these contact the work, the valves are opened to allow the escape of the coolant through a porous-sintered plug 48 adjacent the cutting-tip. Suitable bore diameters for passing coolant are from 0.007 inch to 0.012 inch and sintered plugs allowing a flow-rate of 0.5 to 4 lbs. per hour of carbon dioxide are said to be satisfactory.
