Abstract

700,830. Attachments for centre-drilling. BARRITT, J. R. Dec. 22, 1952 [Sept. 26, 1951], No. 22451/51. Class 83 (3) A centre-drilling attachment for lathes comprises a freely-rotatable member 14 having therein a conical hole 16 to receive the end of a rod to be centred, the member 14 encircling a centre drill 5 held in a holder 4, which may be supported and fed by the lathe tailstock, turret &c., and is movable endwise relatively to the holder 4 against the pressure of springs 29. The member 14 rotates in a bearing 11 in a block 9 which is so mounted in a casing 1 that the latter may slide over the block against the springs 29 when the member 14 is engaged and rotated by the rod, a further conical seating preferably being provided at the other end of the rod to effect the drive. At least two adjustable screws 24 in the casing 1 limit the depth of feed of the drill by co-operation with bosses 22 carried by the block 9. Oil seals 18, 21 are provided at the ends of the bearing 11 which receives oil through a nipple 28. Cutting oil or lubricant is fed to the drill through a passage 7 in the casing 1 and drains away through a passage 8.
