818,794. Tool-holders; lathe details. OWEN, F. Nov. 13, 1956 [Nov. 14, 1955], No. 32444/55. Class 83 (3). A lathe tool-holder comprises a spring 21 enabling the tip of an internal screw-cutting or boring-tool 11 to move resiliently away from the surface of the work when the torque on the shank of the tool is excessive, the spring 21 being a torsion-spring surrounding a sleeve 1 freely mounted in bearings 2, 3. One end of the spring is anchored to the sleeve and the other end to the bearing 3. The tool 11 is held in the sleeve by a draw-bar and nuts 8. The bearings are carried on a slide 14 adjustable, in a vertical plane, angularly about the tip of the tool. A block 15 carrying the slide 14 is mounted in a T-slot 19 of the lathe cross-slide 20. A collar 22 on the sleeve 1 abuts the slide 14 to determine the depth-ofcut. The force exerted by the spring may be adjustable.
