[Class 83 (iii)] A lathe &c. tool holder suitable for forming an annular recess in the bore of a work-piece has the tool 3 carried by a transverse slide 10 mounted in a member 2 axially slidable on a member 1 which is attached by a stem 4 to a turret &c. A vertical pin 14 projecting from the slide 10 engages an inclined slot in the member 1 and the tool projects forwardly through an aperture 13 in a ring 17 freely rotatable on the end of the member 2. A pin 8 on the rear end of the member 2 slides in an axial bore in the stem 4 against spring pressure, and in operation the holder is fed towards the work by the turret &c. until the ring 17 engages the end surface of the work, whereupon further movement of the member 2 is prevented and continued feed of the member 1 causes the slide 10 and tool 3 to be fed transversely to cut the recess in the work. The depth of cut may be limited by a screw 20 with a graduated head screwing in the member 2 and engaging the slide when the required depth has been reached. The ring 17 may be mounted by a plain, roller or ball bearing on a boss 16 attached to the member 2 and more than one pin and slot 14 may be provided to connect the slide 10 and member 2. The device may be arranged for plain boring, in which case the slide 10 is secured in the required lateral position by the screw 20 and an opposing screw in the member 2, or the member 2 may be adjusted on the member 1 to produce the required setting of the slide and locked by the screw 20 and by an axial screw in the member 2 passing through the end wall 5 of the member 1 and secured by a lock-nut.
