833,793. Drilling-machine details. McPHEDRAN, A. C. May 27, 1957, No. 16747/57. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXVIII] A device for drilling a pipe or main &c. A, comprises a valve fitted to the main, as by saddles 1, 2, a valve-housing 8 with a seating 14 and a co-operating valve-head 31 moved by means 22, and a cutter 29 on a spindle rotatable in the housing for boring an opening 30 in the main A. The cutter may be on a spindle passing through a hollow spindle (not shown), carrying the valve-head 31, thus being operable while the spindle-head is seated, or (as illustrated), on the spindle 25 carrying the valvehead, which seats when the hole has been cut. In the construction using an independent drill-spindle, this may be connected to the valve-spindle after the boring operation. The outer end of the spindle 25 has flats 27 to facilitate hand- or power-rotation during drilling, feed of the spindle being effected by turning the sleeve 22, which engages screwthreads 19 in a valve-cap 18 and bears on a shoulder 28 on the spindle. A handle 24 is provided on the sleeve 22, and the end 9 of the housing 8 engages screw-threads in the saddle 1, which may be sealed as by a grommet (not shown), between the saddle and the pipe, against the escape of fluid from the hole 30.
