Abstract

902,459. Drilling machine details. ABBOTT, BIRKS & CO. Ltd., and DAVIS, H. J. Dec. 21, 1959 [Jan. 23, 1959], No. 2622/59. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXVIII] A device for drilling a hole in a pressurized pipe 19, and connecting a ferrule 11 thereto without leakage, comprises a drill 26 having a screwed-end 24 which engages the threaded bore 21 of the ferrule 11, the latter being screwed into a saddle 18 having a seal 20 around the hole in the pipe 19. In operation the saddle 18 is secured to the pipe 19, and the ferrule screwed into the projection 17. The drill is rotated by a tool in a recess 25 and is fed along the ferrule by the screw-thread 21 until the hole is drilled and the end 24 of the drill engages the shoulder 23 of the ferrule. A branch pipe is then fitted to the ferrule at 16, and the drill is retracted to allow the fluid to flow into the branch-pipe. A nut 28 and a gasket 29 seal the end of the ferrule, the cap and gasket having an aperture to allow rotation of the drill, which is sealed off by the end 24 of the drill in its retracted position. In a modification to allow separate feeding and rotation of the drill when drilling metal pipes, the end 30 of the drill, Fig. 2, is rotatable in a plug 31, which engages the screwed bore of the ferrule. The drill may be in the form of a cup having peripheral teeth, or it may be of the cylindrical trepanning saw type.
