Drilling-machines; screwed bushes and ferrules, inserting; stud-boxes.- Apparatus for applying fittings to fluidpressure mains &c. without interruption of service comprises a fluid tight casing adapted for application to the. main and carrying an indexable turret on which the tools for performing the different operations such as drilling, tapping, ferrule inserting, expanding, &c. are mounted. The casing a is mounted on an interchangeable saddle a<1> provided with packing rings and secured on the main A bv a chain a<5> and swivel bolts a<4> having trunnions engaging recesses in lugs a<6> on the casing. A turret b is rotatably secured within the top of the casing by a screwed ring b<1>, Fig. 5, and packing. Recesses 1<x> - - 3<x> on the casing are adapted to receive a spring catch b<3> carried by the turret, index markings being provided to enable, each of the tool heads d - - f to be brought, over the part of the main being operated upon. A removable handle b<6> facilitates rotation of the turret and the catch b<3> may be retained in an inoperative position during rotation. Bosses c<1> on the casing receive screwed pivots on which a bridge c, Figs. 1 and 2, carrying a feed screw c<2>, may be mounted. The tool head d, carrying a combined drill and tap d<2>, is first operated by a reversible ratchet d<3>. The tool head e is next brought into position and carries a sleeve e<1>, Fig. 2, operated by a reversible ratchet e<7> and having an internally screwed lower end to receive an externally screwed ferrule e<x> which is inserted into the tapped hole. An internal mandrel having a conical head e<8> is then drawn through the ferrule by a ratchet e<9> so as to flange the inner end of the ferrule as shown in Fig. 10. The mandrel, which is passed through the ferrule before the latter is introduced into the head, is actuated by a nut e<6> threaded upon its screwed upper end and engaging the sleeve e<1> through a ball bearing e<4>. The third tool head f consists of a sleeve f<1>, Fig. 1, operated by a ratchet f<8> and having a squared end to fit in a recess g<1>, Fig. 10, in a conical plug g which is adapted to. be screwed into the interior of the ferrule so as to close its central aperture. A rod having a manipulating knob f<8>, Fig. 1, at the top and provided at its lower end with a screw thread to engage a recess g<2>, Fig. 10, in the plug passes through the sleeve f<1> and operates, by means of a lock-nut f', to lock the plug on the sleeve. When the plug has been inserted the casing a may be removed and a fitting such as a T-piece, union &c. is applied to the ferrule as shown in Fig. 10. The plug g is then removed to the upper position shown in Fig. 10 and the fitting is ready for use. Any necessary packings mav be applied to the ferrule and it may be provided with a base-block h. For use with different sized ferrules the sleeve e<1> and mandrel e<8> mav be interchangeable or may have adapters secured thereto, and packed glands f<2> &c. Fig. 1, are provided for each of the tool-heads in the turret b.
