[Also in Divisions E2 and F2 A hand-operated drilling and plugging device 5 comprises means enabling attachment of the device to a pipe 6, such as a clamp 7 with a screw ferrule 9, an O ring 8, and an adaptor 10; a drilling tube 19, a cutter 25, a plug 26, and a body 12, for sequentially drilling a hole in the pipe and sealing the hole; a valve 11 operable to prevent escape of pressure fluid from the pipe after drilling and before sealing by the plug 26; a feed nut 15 for screw connection with the body 12 and positive feed towards the pipe during drilling; and a releasable fastening, such as a bayonet connection 16, on the feed nut enabling release of the drilling tube 19 from the nut when drilling is completed to allow rapid direct withdrawal of the tube 19 from the device. As shown in Fig. 1, the tube 19 has a squared lower end 22 which fits into a corresponding recess in the cutter 25 which is firmly secured to the tube 19 by a threaded rod 23. In operation, the device 5 is secured to the ferrule 9 by means of the adaptor 10 and a handle 21, secured to the tube 19, is engaged in the feed nut bayonet slot 16 and rotated clockwise so that the feed nut 15 feeds the cutter 25 downwards to cut a hole through the pipe, which is made, e.g., of P.V.C., the cutter retaining the cut-out disc. The tube 19 and cutter 25 are then withdrawn upwardly, the cutter being accommodated within the body 12, above the valve 11, which is then shut, the handle 21 being disengaged from the slot 16 to allow a rapid raising of the tube 19. The body 12 is then unscrewed from the valve 11 and the cutter is replaced by a threaded plug 26, Fig. 2, which has a recess to engage the squared end 22 of the tube 19. The body 12 is reconnected to the valve 11, which is then opened, and the plug 26 is screwed into the ferrule 9, the feed nut in this case not engaging the threads 13. Since the plug 26 only engages the squared head 22 of the tube 19, the tube may be withdrawn by raising the handle 21. The device 5 can then be unscrewed from the ferrule 9 so that a further pipe may be connected to the ferrule 9 as required. In a modification, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), the handle (21) is fixed to the feed nut (15) which is releasably fastened to the tube (19) by a pivoted latch (33) which is engageable in one of a series of slots (32) in a head (31) of the tube (19).
