[Also in Group XXVIII] In a connection for drill shafting comprising a drill collar connector box 14 and a drill collar pin 12 radially and axially shrink - fitted thereto, the box 14 is provided on its interior surface with a tapered land 50 which merges with a cylindrical surface 63, a generally cylindrical screw - threaded portion 21 with a root thread diameter smaller than the diameter of the surface 63, a cylindrical area 64 having a diameter larger than the root thread diameter, and a cylindrical socket 32 of smaller diameter than the crest diameter of the thread, the bottom 25 of the socket being perpendicular to the axis of the box. The pin 12 has on its exterior surface a tapered land 51 seizingly engaged with the land 50, a cylindrical surface 62 of smaller diameter than that of the land 51 and facing the surface 63, a generally cylindrical screw-threaded portion 20 engaging the threaded portion 21 and with a root thread diameter larger than that of surface 62, a cylindrical nose 30 engaged with the socket 32 and having a diameter smaller than that of the pin thread root, and a cylindrical stem 40 radially spaced from the socket 32 and having a length greater than the thickness of the stem, the end 24 of the stem being perpendicular to the axis of the pin and in engagement with the bottom 25 of the socket 32. The lands, nose, socket, socket bottom and stem end are smooth finished to form a fluid-tight seal when the box 14 is shrink fitted to the pin 12. U.S.A. -Specification 2,636,753 is referred to.
