Abstract

1,201,468. Drilling under pressure; spanners. WALTER SLINGSBY & CO. Ltd. 26 March, 1968 [31 March, 1967], No. 14834/67. Headings B3C and B3N. [Also in Division F2] In a method of performing an underpressure pipe drilling operation and a coupling mounting, a drilling tool 24 and a plug sealed T-coupling 33 is located in a closed chamber 1 of a unit which is then secured on a main pipe, a hole is drilled and screw-threaded in the main pipe wall from the chamber, the tool then being withdrawn and, with the coupling, rotated about an off-set axis to register the coupling with the hole after which the coupling is screwed into the hole. The unit is then withdrawn from the main pipe and a branch pipe is secured to the coupling, the sealing plug 35 being withdrawn from the first sealing position thereof so as to leave a fluid connection between the pipes, and to close the top of the coupling in the second sealing position thereof. The chamber is furnished with an observation window and has a circular off-set opening 9 in which is mounted a housing 11 retained in position by plates 14 and rotatable between two or more positions in each of which the housing is looked by a plunger 17, Fig. 1 (not shown). The housing carries a drill spindle 19 for a drill-tapping tool 24 and capable of rotary and axial movement; the spindle projects into a bridge 25 pivotally carried by a yoke 26 and a feed screw is engageable with the top 28 of the spindle which receives a ratchet tool. A coupling carrier spindle 20, also mounted in the housing, has a hexagonal or other shaped head 30 which supports at box spanner head 31, the latter fitting over a complementary part of a mounting ferrule 32 of the T-coupling 33.
