1347252 Stopping pipes G J EVANS 21 May 1971 [24 Feb 1970 24 March 1970 9 April 1970 27 May 1970 3 July 1970 (2) 2 Sept 1970] 8768/70 14324/70 16807/70 25348/70 32289/70 35051/70 and 42060/70 Heading F2P Pipe stopping apparatus comprises an openended body 34 connectible by means of a nipple 32 at its open end to a hole 30 in the wall of a pipe 10, means 62 for sealing the body against escape therethrough of fluid from the pipe, a frame supporting a flexible diaphragm 72 that is held in a collapsed condition within the body and may be advanced from the body into the pipe in which the frame is expanded to a generally circular condition so that the diaphragm peripherally seals against the wall of the pipe. In the embodiment described a conventional underpressure drilling and tapping device (Fig. 1, not shown) is secured to the pipe and the hole 30 made therein. After removal of the drilling and tapping instrument (22) from a housing (12) of the device nipple 32 is screwed into the hole 30 and the body 34 introduced into the housing (12) and is sealed to the housing by means of an adaptor plate 90 with holes 92 for receiving clamping bolts (24). A coupling nut 40 is screwed on to nipple 32 by rotation of the body 34 and the housing (12) may then be removed and the nut 40 tightened. Rotation of nut 56 on feed screw 60 advances plug 62 pushing the diaphragm supporting frame into the pipe. The frame comprises two spring steel strips 78 hinged together at 80, 82. Hinge 80 is rigidly secured to plug 62 and hinge 82 is slidably mounted on the plug by means of pin 86 sliding in tube 38. As the frame is advanced contact with the opposite wall of the pipe pushes pin 86 into tube 88, expanding the strips 78 into a circular condition (Fig. 5, not shown) pressing the rim 76 of the diaphragm into contact with the wall of the pipe. Plug 62 and nipple 32 have curved end surfaces 70 and 31 that substantially follow the curvature of the pipe to provide an adequate seal in the region of the hole 30.
