Abstract

1,220,973. Drilling apparatus. EDWARD BARBER & CO. Ltd. 19 Sept., 1969 [24 Oct., 1968], No. 50595/68. Heading B3C. [Also in Division F2] A strap 2 is bolted or clamped to a plastics &c. pipe 1, and an internally threaded sleeve 6 containing a tapping tool 12 is screwed on to a threaded spigot 3 on the strap, so that the tool can be screwed downwards to broach the pipe. As shown, a seal ring 8 is provided between the lower flange 7 of the sleeve 6 and the strap 2, but alternatively the lower end of the threaded interior of the sleeve and the spigot 3 may be tapered. A removable cap 10 allows access to the tool 12, which has a hole 16 to receive a key or turning tool. When the tool 12 is screwed to its uppermost position, an 0-ring 15 or a flat washer prevents leakage through the removable cap 10. When screwed down to its lowermost position, a frusto-conical surface on the tool 12 seals in the spigot 3. The tool 12 may be in one piece, or in two pieces of gunmetal and stainless steel shrunk-fitted together, the latter providing the working face. Radially projecting lugs may be provided on the sleeve 6 to facilitate gripping it.
