Abstract

760,622. Portable drilling-and-turning apparatus. FOPPEN, G. April 26, 1954, No. 12006/54. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXVIII] A connecting-piece 2, for connecting a main pipe 1 to a branch-pipe, has a guide-surface 9 whereby, after connecting the end 2<SP>1</SP> to the pipe 1, e.g. by welding at 3, and the arm 4 to the branch-pipe, a drill 13 may be inserted in sealed relationship to the surface 9 to pierce the wall of the pipe 1. The drill 13, which may be hollow to receive the drillings, is sealed in the limb 9 by a rubber ring 15 compressed by a sleeve 16, and the drill is rotated by a ratchet-wrench, engaged at 19, and fed by a screw 22 in a clamp 21 screwed to a member 10 attached to the connecting-piece 2. After the drill is removed, a turning-device 31 with a rubber sealing-ring 32 is inserted to true the seating surfaces or seats 7, 8, to be engaged subsequently by sealing and stopping pins. The device 31 has two cutting- edges 29, 37, of diameters corresponding to the seats 7, 8, and has grooves 30 to receive the cuttings. A hole 40 at each end serves for fixing a sleeve 42 thereto, having a bayonet slot 43 for engagement by a handle to rotate the tool 31. In a modification, Fig. 7, a spring- loaded valve 112, which is pushed aside by the drill 110 or turning device automatically closes the limb 9 of the connecting-piece to prevent escape of fluid when the drill or truing device is withdrawn. The connecting-piece 2 may be attached to the main 1 by, a saddle and U-bolt.
