Abstract

159,023. Norris, H. Kent-, and Plenty & Son, Ltd. Nov. 20, 1919. Regulating.-In an inertia governor adapted to cut off the fuel feed when excessive speed occurs, means are provided for ensuring that an injection of fuel less than normal occurs immediately after a cut-out operation, in order to avoid the violent explosion which usually occurs after a cutout period. A reciprocating rod a is formed with a projection b arranged to slide over an incline d, so that when excessive speed occurs, the rod is thrown outwards sufficiently to engage a lever f, which is thereby rotated and actuates an arm g and cam j so as to operate a valve k controlling the fuel supply. For example, the cam may open a by-pass valve, or may hold open a suction valve, of the feed-pump. The cam is then locked in the operative position by a pawl l engaging a notch m in the cam, an extension l<1> of the pawl falling into the path of the rod a so as to be actuated thereby to release the cam at the end of the next up-stroke of the rod a, the cam being then returned by a spring. The arm l<1> is fitted with a screw stud p which is adjusted so that the rod a contacts therewith towards the end of the stroke of the feed-pump, thereby ensuring the smaller supply of fuel immediately after the cut-out. A step-by-step arrangement may be provided between the cam and pawl, so that the return to normal fuel feed occurs in successive stages during two or more upward strokes of the rod a. In an engine with two or more cylinders, similar cams are provided on each cylinder, operating-plungers being provided between the arms g of the cams. In a modification, the cams are replaced by lever arms.
