Tappet-actuated pumps; stroke, varying. - In an internal - combustion engine having a fuel pump worked by an inertia governor, the guide plate is formed with two shoulders 7, 8 of different inclination, the shoulder 8 being brought into action for reversing and the shoulder 7 for normal running in either direction. When the shoulder 8 is in action, the tappet 2 does not engage the rod 4 until the engine has slowed down. During normal working, teeth on a piece 12 engage teeth on a piece 15 attached to the tappet rod 4 and prevent the pump rod 5 from reaching the outer limit of its stroke. For reversing, the piece 12 is turned until the teeth no longer engage and the pump rod takes its outermost position so that a large quantity of fuel is supplied for the reversing-impulse. The piece 12 is returned to its normal position by a spring, when the rod 4 is lifted.
