Gas or explosive-vapour engines.-The fuel pump is arranged to deliver fuel only when the engine is running in tne direction corresponding to the position of the valve-gear, so that, on reversing, the delivery of fuel is suspended until the engine starts to run in the opposite direction. This result is effected by a cam sleeve 9 slidable on the crank or other shaft 3 and connected with the reversing- mechanism, this cam opening the suction valve 5 of the pump, allowing the same to be opened by a spring 8, or opening a valve 24 between the pressure and the suction sides of the pump, during the pressure stroke of the pump. The lift and the duration of opening of the valve may be determined by means of a wedge 29 or by adjusting the fulcrum 16 of the lever 17 manually or by a governor. The valve 5 may be fitted with a small pressure-relieving valve as shown in Fig. 6.
