Abstract

126,812. Dawson, S. H. W., and Sharpley, G. R. May 21, 1918. Reversing.-An eccentric 28 lor actuating the fuel-injection pump 1 is driven by a lug 13 on a clutch element 11 on the crank-shaft 10 engaging in a recess 12 in the eccentric. When reversing, the clutch element 11 is withdrawn and the eccentric lags behind until a projection 14 on it is engaged by the clutch lug 13, which causes a pump stroke to be made in the opposite phase, producing a premature explosion and reversal, whereupon the eccentric again lags until the clutch reengages in the original position. The clutch element 11, in addition to the lug 13, has a recess 15 normally engaged by a lug 14 on the eccentric. The element is slid on the shaft 10, .for reversal, by moans of a hand-lever 22, link 24, and a bellcrank 19 connected to the end of a shifting-lever 17. The bell-crank 19 also lifts a rod 20 carrying a leaf spring 21, which normally bears on the inertia tappet 5 of the pump; the tappet then ceases to actuate the pump until the engine slows down, when the pump is actuated in the opposite phase. The rod 20 is in two parts, connected by a pin 30 and slot 31, so that the upper part carrying the spring 21 can be lifted against a spring 29 independently of the handle 22, by means of a screw-and-nut device 33. In order to inject more fuel at the time of reversal, the eccentric 28 encircles a fixed eccentric 27 on the shaft 10, the eccentricities of the two being in the same direction at the time of reversal. To prevent jarring of the lever 22, a square lug on the link 24 engages a recess in the lever and is lifted by a cam 26 into a slot 25 when the lever is moved to the right in Fig. 3. In a multi-cylinder engine, one or more of the fuel pumps may be actuated in the manner described, the remainder being actuated by an inertia tappet driven from an ordinary eccentric, the tappet being controlled by a spring such as 21 which is lifted during reversal.
