Abstract

154,863. Evans, W. F. June 30, 1920. Locking nuts.-A washer for locking bolts for railroad fish-plates &c. is stamped from sheet metal and has one or more lugs 27 tapered in the direction of the depth and away from the axis of the bolt hole 23, said lugs being forced by a nut 29 into recesses 19 in the fish-plate 14, the hole being thereby contracted into clamping engagement with the bolt 17. The ends 32 of the washers are split to form tongues 34 to engage the side faces of the nut. The tongues may be bent up permanently and act as springs, and may be provided with off-set portions 36, the edges 35 being bevelled. An elliptical portion 18 of the bolt shanks is housed in an elliptical hole in the fish-plate to prevent turning, the bolts being inserted alternatively in opposite directions. The washer may be split from the hole 23 outwardly.
