Abstract
152,817. Whitehouse, F. C. Aug. 12, 1919. Two-stroke-cycle engines.-The engine is of the kind in which (1) air only is induced and compressed in the crank case and transferred to the cylinder at the end of the explosion stroke, and (2) a rich gaseous mixture is induced and compressed in an annular chamber formed by an enlarged extension of the main cylinder and is introduced into the cylinder during the compression stroke. According to the invention, the flow of the air and mixture is controlled by passages arranged in the cylinder and piston, and the passage that delivers the mixture to the cylinder is controlled by a valve. In the construction shown, air enters the crank case, at the end of the in-stroke, through an opening e in the cylinder, passage g in the piston, and passage h in the cylinder wall. At the end of the out-stroke, the top of the passage h is uncovered by the piston n, and the compressed air enters the power cylinder a. The gaseous mixture enters the annular chamber c at the end of the out-stroke through an inlet i, Fig. 4, in the cylinder, passage i in the piston, and passage k in the cylinder wall. During the in-stroke the mixture is compressed in the chamber c and driven into the cylinder through the valve l, Fig. 5. A modified arrangement of the valve l is shown in Fig. 6. The valve o. at the top of the cylinder is a hand-operated relief valve.
