Abstract

151,144. Sturgess, F. W. Aug. 22, 1919. Variable-speed toothed gearing comprises a pinion 7 on a swinging and sliding arm 9 coacting with a member 1 having toothed steps, 2, 3, 4 connected by spirals 5, 6 to facilitate change of speed. The pinion 7 is connected to a feathered shaft 10 by a gear 14, and the end 11 of the arm 9 is guided in a slotted plate 13. The changes of speed are effected by a power driven shaft 17 having worms 16 engaged by a pin 15 on the arm 9. The driving and driven shaft of the gearing are 21 and 22 respectively. The shaft 17 and with it the member 1 are driven through a reversing - train 24, 29, 27, 25 and chain 18 operated by a double clutch 26 so as to allow the worms 16 to be used for changing speed in both directions. Another reversing-train 33, 30, 34, 35, 36, 31 operated by a clutch 32 is provided between the shaft 10 and the shaft 22. The clutches 32, 26 are operated simultaneously if the shaft 22 is not to be reversely driven, but means are described for operating the latter alone for reversed driving. The shafts 21, 22 may be connected directly by a clutch 44, Fig. 2. The clutches 32, 26 are connected by links 42, 43 to a lever 41, which is operated to select the direction of speed change by rocking a lever 37, Fig. 3, towards and from the gear case 23. Movement of the lever 37 at right-angles rocks a lever 45, which brings the pin 15 into engagement with a worm 16, and so starts the speed change operation.
