Abstract

150,923. Schmidt, F., Girard, E. L., and Messlein, M. A. Nov. 19, 1919. Jet-wheels; reversing; working-fluid supply.- An internal-combustion jet-wheel 25 with staggered vanes 31 as shown in Fig. 14 is surrounded by a number of combustion chambers 35, which are fed by compressor cylinders 50 and discharges on to the vanes through reversing-valves 37 and curved slide valves 40. The gases exhaust through ports 47. The compressor pistons 51 are connected in pairs by rods 70, which are reciprocated by links 103, 102, and a crank 93 driven by a gear 91 in mesh with a gear 90 on the rotor shaft 27. For the purpose of periodically shutting off the compressor cylinders from the combustion chambers, each piston 50 is adapted to be oscillated on its rod so as to cut off its supply conduit 53 from the port 58 leading to the combustion chamber. This oscillation is effected by a cam- 62, Fig. 7, engaging a pin 60 on the piston, and the pin 60 is used also (a) to actuate the slide valve 40 by striking a 'bell-crank lever 81, and (b) to open the inlet valve 57 of the compressor cylinder 50 by striking a lever 112.
