Abstract

150,177. Deam, O. Sept. 12, 1919. Cup-leather packing; connected to source of high pressure; stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.- Relates to stuffing-boxes for the cylinders of compressors and other machines in which very high pressures are employed and consists in using a pair of oppositely-disposed cup leathers pressed apart by a strong helical spring, the space between the leathers being filled with oil &c. at a pressure approximately that in the cylinder. As shown, the bottom of the box is shaped to receive the leather F within which is a metal ring G, loosely fitting so as not to press the leather against the rod. The outer leather L is pressed against the seating R on the end of the box by the gland D, which presses on a loose ring K. The leather contains a metal ring M, loosely fitting like the ring G. A strong spring N presses the rings G, M apart, the length of the spring being adjusted to give the required pressure when the gland is screwed hard down. Oil &c. under pressure is supplied through the opening O.
