Grates and fuel-holders.-A " hearth-fire " is constructed of three separate detachable blocks a, b, c of fire-clay or other refractory material, which stand upon the hearth and support a grid or fire-bars f. The front block is preferably curved, and the top faces of all three blocks incline downwards towards the centre of the grate. A passage d through the front block, which is more or less closed by the ash-pan g, supplies air beneath the fire. Air-holes h lead from the passage d to the top face of the front block.
