Abstract
1424357 Manoeuvring ships F T RANDELL 21 March 1973 [30 March 1972] 14985/72 Heading B7V A ship 1 is steered and manoeuvred by side thruster units 2 and 3 each comprising a horizontal series of holes through which air is released to form a rising stream 4 which induces a water flow Q to produce a sideways thrust Px on the ship. The air stream may be produced by a steam injector/condenser unit, Fig. 4 (not shown), or by a mechanical compressor. The bow thrusters 2 may be on the convergent part of the bow so that their joint use has a braking effect. The normal stern rudder may be omitted and a bow screw may be used. A forward water intake 9 is selectively connectable to side outlets 10 to provide further manoeuvrability when the ship is under way. Water from the inlet 9 may also be utilized on board, for example for cooling purposes.
