Abstract

1413842 Bulk-cargo ships G N DRAGONAS and A G SPYROU 19 Jan 1973 [31 Jan 1972] 4504/72 Heading B7A Cargo containers 7 are detachable from a skeleton 1 of the ship so that they can be towed to load handling facilities which are inaccessible to the ship. The containers fit into ship berths provided with downwardly projecting tongues 8 and 9 for engaging corresponding recesses in the containers. Loaded containers are secured to the ship by ballasting the ship from its illustrated position so that the tongues enter the recesses whereafter fasteners 15 are operated. Control and manoeuvering systems may be provided to ensure proper alignment of the skeleton and containers. The containers may be secured to the skeleton simultaneously or sequentially. In the latter case, containers already in place are partially restrained to allow relative vertical movement of those containers and the skeleton. Containers secured to the skeleton may be connected together by pipes for ballasting purposes. The berths may be lined with wood or a resilient material for protective purposes. The spine of the skeleton may be constructed as a box girder. The con. tainers may hold liquid or solid cargoes.
