Abstract

1413627 Automatic control of position MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO K K 2 Feb 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 5432/73 Heading G3R [Also in Divisions B3 and H5] In a method of producing a tubular body 25 by electroslag melting of a plurality of electrodes 19, the mould is raised continuously as the electrodes are consumed. The mould consists of an inner part 21 having arms 28 fixed to a nut 29 mounted on a screw-threaded spindle 30, and an outer part mounted by arms 36 and nuts 37 on screw-threaded spindles 38. The spindles 30 and 38 can be rotated by a motor 33 to raise and lower the mould. A starter piece 10 is moved vertically and also rotated by a motor 7 via gear 6, spindle 8 and table 9. The electrodes 19 are attached to a disc 16 which is fixed in the vertical direction and is rotated or reciprocated by a motor 17. In operation, the level of molten metal in the mould is sensed by means of an isotope 26 emitting 7-rays and a detector 27. The signal from the detector passes to a control box 11 which actuates the motor 7 to cause a raising or lowering of the starter piece 10 to assist in maintaining constant the said molten metal level. Lubrication between the mould and cast tube 25 is provided by a thin film 46 of slag which forms on the surface of the tube. The amount of slag then consumed is made up by an equivalent amount of slag supplied from the hoppers 42 which are raised at the same rate as the mould.
