Abstract
1400284 Electroslag casting processes; continuous casting BOHLER & CO A G Gebr 1 Aug 1972 [17 Sept 1971] 35941/72 Heading B3F [Also in Division G3] In an electroslag refining plant, current is separately supplied to each of a plurality of consumable electrodes. When the current through each electrode has fallen below a respective predetermined value, the position of a common electrode holder relative to a mould is automatically adjusted. As shown, three cylindrical steel electrodes 10 penetrate a slag layer 60 in a water-cooled mould 20. A molten pool 31 forms on top of a solid ingot 30 supported by a copper plate 40. An electrode holder 11 and the mould 20 are supported by vertically movable carriages 12, 23 controlled by lifting gear 13, 24. In use, each electrode is connected to one phase of a threephase supply R, S, T, the neutral line M being connected to plate 40. The current in each phase flows through an ammeter 71 with contacts 71<SP>1</SP> which close if the current falls to a preset value. This value may be different for each phase and may be proportional to the cross-sectional area of the corresponding electrode 10. When all the contact sets 71<SP>1</SP> have closed, current flows through pulsed relays 73, 76 to energize further relays 16, 27 which connect supplies to motors driving lifting gear 13, 24. This action causes stepwise lowering of the electrodes and stepwise raising of the mould in a preset ratio. Relays 73, 76 may be bypassed by switches 74, 77 to allow rapid carriage movement. There may be a plurality of moulds secured to the same holder.
