Abstract

1,119,706. Grinding tapers. CRAVEN BROS. (MANCHESTER) Ltd. 3 May, 1966 [5 May, 1965], No. 19032/65. Heading B3D. When grinding a tapered neck portion 11 on a roll 10, the means driving the grinding wheel 15a longitudinally and the means driving the grinding wheel radially are interconnected so that they can be simultaneously operated to effect both longitudinal and radial movement of the wheel in accordance with a predetermined relationship. The wheel 15a is mounted for longitudinal movement on a cross-slide 18 of a saddle 21 which is moved by a lead screw 30. The wheel is also mounted on an arm 16 which is swung about a pivot 17 by a push-rod 19. A motor (27), Fig. 2 (not shown), drives the lead screw (30) and push-rod through a gearbox (28) which incorporates change gears (32), bevel gears 34, 37 and a worm wheel 38, the latter co-operating with the screw-threaded shank of the push-rod to obtain a vertical motion of the push-rod; a device (40) compensates for lost motion. The push-rod 19 is provided with a cam-plate 22 which is adjustable by a screw 24 and suitably shaped to produce a theoretically correct straight taper. Instead of using a cam-plate, the upper surface of the push-rod may be shaped as illustrated in Figs. 3 to 5 (not shown).
