Abstract
1407557 Induction sintering of ferrous metal powder GLEASON WORKS 17 Aug 1973 [5 Sept 1972] 39005/73 Headings C7D and C7N Ferrous metal powder compacts are pre-heated to raise the outer surface only to at least 300F and then inductively heated to sintering temperature. The pre-heating is carried out by radiant heat preferably to above 400F but below the sintering temperature and the compact may be cooled to room temperature prior to induction heating in a field of at least 1K Hz. After attaining sintering temperature by inductive heating e.g. 1800- 2500F the temperature may be maintained by radiant heating to complete the sintering. The pre-heating of the surface of the compact reduces or eliminates the incubation period of the powder compact in a low frequency induction field and consequently sintering temperature is reached more quickly. As shown in the Figure a continuous process of pre-heating, induction heating, radiant heating and temperature adjustment of the sintered compact to 1500-1900F for final press forming can be carried out. The compact is formed by mechanical or isostatic pressing of a mixture of Fe and graphite powder e.g. Fe + 0.2-0.6 per cent graphite and the process is used for the production of bevel and spur gears.
