Abstract

1352061 Hot pressing metallic or ceramic bodies BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO Ltd 2 March 1972 [2 Jan 1971] 205/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C7] Hot pressed metallic or ceramic bodies are formed by hot pressing the heated powder compact in at least two directions substantially normal to each other. The compact may be sintered and pressed while still hot or a cold sintered compact may be reheated prior to pressing. As shown an Fe or steel powder is compacted and sintered at 1100-1200‹ C. and the hot compact 1 is pressed in a split die 2a, 2b. The compact is first pressed laterally by downward movement of actuator 5 so that mating wedge surfaces 11, 13 and 12, 14 move the die segments together. The compact is then pressed vertically by downward movement of upper punch 3 and optionally the upward movement of lower punch 4. The die is preferably maintained at 150-350‹ C. during pressing.
