Abstract

1403503 I C engine exhaust gas recirculation NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 6 Sept 1973 [9 Sept 1972 3 Oct 1972] 41917/73 Heading F1B The failure or incorrect operation of an exhaust gas recirculation metering valve 18, operated by a diaphragm 20 in response to the vacuum in the induction system, e.g. at a carburetter port 26 which is upstream of the throttle valve 12 in the minimum open position, is detected by a detector 32 which operates to cause a relay 58 to be actuated to energize an alarm 56, e.g. a buzzer or lamp. The detector 32 may comprise a diaphragm 34 carrying a contact 46 which engages the contact 48 to blow the fuse 62 and energize the relay 58 if the diaphragm 20 should rupture and the pressure in the detector chamber 36, normally equal to that in chamber 40, rises towards atmospheric pressure. With the fuse 62 blown the relay will, with the ignition switch 50 closed, remain energized due to the circuit through the load 60. The circuit to the fuse 62 may include three switches (64, 66, 68), Fig. 4 (not shown). One switch (64) is closed above a predetermined engine temperature, another switch (66) is closed above a predetermined vacuum, e.g. 50 mm Hg, in the induction system and the third switch (68) is closed if the valve 18 is not open to a predetermined extent, e.g. an extent corresponding to a predetermined induction vacuum, e.g. 45 mm Hg. The third switch (68) may be replaced by a temperature responsive switch (84), Fig. 7 (not shown) in the recirculation conduit downstream of the valve 18. The latter switch (84) is closed if the detected temperature is below a predetermined value, e.g. 100 or 200‹C, indicating the partial or complete lack of recirculation. The detector may comprise a switch (112, 114), Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), operated by the valve 18 and open below a predetermined valve opening. The switch (112, 114) is in the circuit of an electromagnetic or electronic latching relay (96) which closes the circuit of the alarm when the ignition switch 50 and the valve operated switch (112, 114) are closed. The alarm 56 is energized until the valve 18 opens to the predetermined opening.
