Abstract

PURPOSE:To simplify the self-diagnosis of EGR by judging abnormal when the difference between the quantity of intake air at the time of opening an EGR passage and the quantity of intake air at the time of closing it is within a defined range. CONSTITUTION:The detected values of an intake pipe pressure sensor 2, a rotation sensor 7 provided on a distributor 6, a throttle position sensor 10, an intake air temperature sensor 12, etc. are inputted into a control circuit 8, which, in turn, carries out the opening/closing control of the opening of an EGR valve 13 via a solenoid valve 15. That is, at the time of cold, idling, and high load conditions, an atmospheric pressure is introduced into a modulator 14 and the EGR valve 13 is closed, whereas, at the time of other operating conditions, negative pressure in the vicinity of a throttle valve 9 is introduced into the modulator 14. When the conditions of EGR is being established, by carrying out the opening/closing of the EGR valve 13 via the solenoid valve 15 and if the deviation of intake pipe pressures across the EGR valve 13 is in a defined range, the EGR is judged abnormal and a warning lamp 30 is turned ON.
