Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the warming-up performance of a catalyst during the low speed and light load period in a secondary air supply unit in which the fuel/air ratio at a catalyst inlet side is prescribed, by closing an EGR valve and also by sending the secondary air only to the exhaust gas passage when the engine temperature is lower than the prescribed one. CONSTITUTION:When the engine temperature is lower than the prescribed one, a temperature sensor 65 sets an electromagnetic valve 64 to the atmospheric side, and closes an EGR valve 50 regardless of the opening of a throttle valve 14 in order to stop the supply of the secondary air to an air supply passage 10, permitting the air to be supplied to an exhaust gas passage 18 only. Next, if the engine temperature becomes higher than the prescribed one, the electromagnetic valve 64 connects an EGR valve negative pressure chamber 54 with a port 70, and an EGR valve 50 is operated depending upon the opening of the throttle valve 14. The secondary air supply is controlled through a signal from an air/fuel ratio sensor 20. If the secondary air supply shortage due to the closure of the EGR valve 50 is foreseen, an electromagnetic valve 34 is operated regardless of the air/fuel ratio sensor 20 in order to connect a supply valve 32 and a negative pressure chamber 38 with the air supply passage 10, thereby opening fully the supply valve 32 for the secondary air supply.
