Abstract
1,262,252. Treating charge; preventing atmospheric pollution. NISSAN MOTOR CO. Ltd. Jan. 13, 1970 [Jan. 20, 1969; March 22, 1969], No.1552/70. Heading F1B. An I.C. engine exhaust recirculation system comprises an exhaust manifold communicating with an inlet valve through a passage having a normally-closed recirculation valve 16, Fig. 2 opened by cam means which is only brought into an operative condition when the intake manifold vacuum is below a predetermined level, the cam then being rotatable in response to throttle valve movement to open the recirculation valve in a predetermined range of throttle valve positions. A cam 20, rotating with the throttle valve 2 is moved axially into chamber (25) Fig. 4 (not shown) when the inlet manifold vacuum is sufficient to overcome spring (26) thereby aligning cam surface (20b) with the valve 16. The latter is closed by its spring 18 to cut off the flow of exhaust gas to the inlet manifold. The cam is in the Fig.4 position when the vacuum is decreased below a predetermined level and valve 16 is opened when the projection 20a is aligned with the valve stem. In another embodiment the valve 16 is replaced by a solenoid actuated valve (30) Fig. 6 (not shown) which has switches (31) and (32) in its supply circuit which are respectively actuated by the inlet manifold vacuum and the throttle valve setting. In a modification an ignition switch may be arranged in series with switch (31) and (32). The exhaust gases may pass through a filter (54) before entering the valve (30).
