Abstract
1284323 Treating I C engine charge NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 13 March 1970 [19 March 1969] 12138/70 Heading F1B To reduce the quantity of toxic nitrogen oxides contained in the exhaust gases of a motor vehicle I C engine during acceleration and hill-climbing exhaust gases are supplied to the intake manifold 2 or to the carburetter downstream of the throttle valve. The exhaust gas passage 13, 14 to the manifold 2 is opened, when the switches 22 and 23 are closed, by a valve member 15 movable against the bias of a spring 18. The switch 22 is biased closed by a spring 30 and opened when the intake manifold vacuum acting on the diaphragm 27 is above a predetermined level, e. g. - 350 mm Hg. The relay switch 23, which is normally open, is closed when the voltage delivered by a speed detector 31 driven from the output shaft of the gear box 7 corresponds to a vehicle speed in a predetermined range, e.g. 20 to 80 km /h. In the embodiment shown, valve member 15 is intergral with the core 17 of a solenoid coil 19. The passage 13 contains a filter 13a, e.g. for carbon. In further embodiments, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the exhaust gas passage (38, 39) is controlled by a valve spool (41) slidable in a casing (37) or a valve member (55) connected to a diaphragm (54). The valve spool or member are spring-biased closed and the spool or diaphragm is subjected to intake manifold vacuum under the control of a valve member (49), which is spring-biased to close the vacuum connection and opened by a solenoid coil (51) when the switches 22 and 23 are closed. The ignition switch 34 may be included in the solenoid circuit.
