Abstract

1,265,435. Treating I.C.engine charge. NISSAN MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 13, 1970 [March 22, 1969], No. 12137/70. Heading F1B. To reduce the quantity of tonic nitrogen oxides contained in the exhaust gases of a motor vehicle I.C. engine during acceleration and hill-climbing, exhaust gases are supplied to the intake manifold 2 or to the carburetter 4 downstream of the throttle valve 6. A solenoid coil 19 is energized to move the valve member 15 against the biasing spring 18 and open the passage 13, 14 to the manifold 2 when the switches 22 and 23 are closed. The first switch 22 is closed over a predetermined range of throttle valve angles, e.g. 15 degrees to 45 degrees, by a cam 24 on the throttle shaft 6a and the second normally-open relay switch 23 is closed when the voltage from a speed detector 28 driven from the output shaft of the gear-box 7 corresponds to a vehicle speed in a predetermined range, e. g. 20 to 80 Km/hr. The exhaust recirculation passage 13 contains a filter 13a, e.g. for carbon. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the second switch (32) is operated by a solenoid coil (34) which is energized by a pulse rate counter (37), connected to the engine distributor, at engine speeds in a predetermined range, e.g. 1, 500 to 3, 200 r.p.m. The ignition switch 31 may be included in the solenoid circuit.
