Abstract

1,270,516. Treating charge, preventing atmospheric pollution. NISSAN MOTOR CO. Ltd. Jan.13, 1970 [Jan. 20, 1969; July 31, 1969], No. 1553/70. Heading F1B. In an I. C. engine induction system a passage inter-connects an exhaust and an induction passage through an exhaust recirculation control valve actuated by a solenoid which is energized by first and second means responsive to intake manifold vacuum and to engine speed so that exhaust gases are recirculated only when the intake manifold vacuum is below a certain level and the engine speed is within a predetermined range. The valve 10, Fig. 2, controls the flow of exhaust gas from exhaust manifold 2 into inlet manifold 3. The passage includes a metering orifice 13a and may include a filter 34 to remove carbon. Switches 20, 21 are respectively responsive to inlet manifold vacuum and engine speed. A pulse counter 33 excites a solenoid coil 30 when it detects pulses from the primary winding of an ignition coil of an ignition distributor 8 corresponding to an engine speed in the desired range thereby moving core 31 to close switch 21. In another embodiment a solenoid actuated valve (41), Fig.4 (not shown), when opened, connects a chamber (49), of a suction actuated valve (42), with the inlet manifold (3). This causes a spool (46) to move to a position where ports (43a) and (44a) are in communication thereby admitting exhaust gas from exhaust manifold (2) to the inlet manifold (3). In a modification of Fig. 4 (not shown), the conduit (51) is connected to a chamber on one side of a diaphragm which moves a valve controlling the connection of the exhaust manifold with the inlet manifold.
