Abstract

139,899. Foster, H. F. March 25, 1919. Clutches, friction. - In friction clutches for motor-vehicles &c., a pair of curved wedges are moved circumferentially in opposite directions between concentric and eccentric surfaces respectively, the wedges forming the friction clutching-parts or bearing against a spring ring forming the clutching-part. Wedge blocks 6 loosely carried on the driving or driven member 2 have eccentric inner surfaces for engagement with an eccentric 4 on the member 2, and concentric outer surfaces for engaging a driven or driving drum 5. A spring 7 presses the blocks circumferentially so that they jam between the parts 4, 5. Toggle-links, guided by a slotted arm 10 on the member 2 and controlled by an axially sliding link 11, move the blocks 6 for declutching, motion being limited by stops 13. In a modification, the blocks are formed internally concentric and externally eccentric and engage respectively with a. concentric boss on the member 2 and the eccentric inner face of a castiron clutch band, which is pinned at its centre to an arm on the member 2 and is expanded into clutching engagement with the member 5.
