Clutches, friction. - In fluid-operated segment clutches, a ring a of a metal such as steel which will expand or contract appreciably under strain is arranged in a groove b in one shaft c. One wall of the groove is formed by a ring f. Segments bear upon the ring a and carry lugs n engaging notches in the parts c, f. Hydraulic or other fluid pressure is supplied through a passage d to a cup leather e bearing on the ring a so that the segments i are pressed against a drum j on he other shaft k. Springs may disengage the segments from the drum when the fluid pressure is removed. The ring a and segments may be arranged to be pressed inwardly against a collar on the shaft k.
