Abstract
21,310. Hopper, F. Sept. 27. Clutches, friction. - Relates to expanding- segment clutches for motor-cycles, motor-cars, &c. The driven pulley 1 has a flange 2 within which are placed segments 5 bearing at one end against inclined abutments 4 on a boss 3 keyed to the driving-sleeve 6, and at the other end against wedges 9 carried by a plate 12. A spring 14 keeps the plate 12 in the outward position so that the clutch is in engagement. For disengagement the plate 12 is moved inwards by a lever 16, and taper pins 13 carried by the plate engages holes 17 in the segments to disengage them positively. A cover-plate 10 keeps the segments in position, and a cap 21 excludes dust and wet and retains oil.
