Abstract

122,250. Ter Cock, C. Jan. 17, 1918. Clutches, friction.-In cone and plate friction clutches of the kind in which a central operating- sleeve is arranged between main operating-springs and cushion springs arranged to ensure the gradual engagement and disengagement of the clutch, the main spring is so shaped as to lie normally on or near the surface of a cone. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the operating-sleeve E is arranged between a main conical spiral spring M, bearing against the cover of the driving flywheel W, and cushion springs C bearing against a clutch cone R sliding on the driven shaft T. During the first part of the engaging movement of the sleeve E, the clutch pressure is produced by the springs C, the sleeve E subsequently contacting with the cone R to employ the pressure of the spring M. During disengagement, the pressure of the spring M is first removed, bolts 20 secured on the sleeve E subsequently producing positive disengagement. The spring M may be replaced by a series of leaf springs M, Fig. 5, arranged tangentially or radially to a carrier 3. Both main and cushion springs may be of the conical spiral type and may bear on parts connected to the operating sleeve and movable clutch part, respectively, by rods provided with suitable stops. The invention is shown applied also to a Weston-type plate clutch, in which instance the sleeve E is moved towards the fly-wheel W for disengagement. During disengagement, the main springs may move into or past the position in which they lie entirely in one plane.
