Abstract

6784. Bowley, J. W. March 18. Clutches. - Relates to combined friction and claw clutches in which the pressure on the friction surfaces is partly or completely relieved as the claw clutch comes into operation. Keyed to one shaft a is a boss c provided with a collar f which has projections engaging longitudinal slots in a sliding part h. Pivoted on the collar f are levers l having at one end rollers p pressed against the part h by springs o, and at the other end cam-slots engaging a friction-plate k which slides on the boss c. An adjustable plate v is provided for adjusting the strength of the spring o, and a cover n retains oil. When the surface r of the part h engages the levers, the plate k is pressed into engagement with the drum d on the other shaft b. As the surface s is reached, the friction clutch is released and claw parts on the drum d and part h engage. The surface t retains the part h in position. Cone friction parts may be employed, and, instead of claw teeth, the part h may carry rods passing through the boss e and adapted to engage holes in the drum d. Fig. 7 shows the application to a segmental clutch, in which segments k are put in engagement through cushioning-springs y when levers l engage a raised surface h' of the sliding-part h, and released again when the surface h<3> is reached.
