Abstract

23,249. Woodhouse, A. E. Oct. 11. Clutches, friction.-In centrifugally-operated segment clutches, the segments are restrained by an axially-moving part until a predetermined speed is attained. Segments g, Fig. 1, adapted to engage a ' Ferodo ' covered drum a, slide on a flange f on a sleeve c secured to the driving-shaft d and have recesses within which fits a projection k on a spring-pressed sleeve j when the clutch is disengaged. The faces of the projection k are so inclined that, at a predetermined speed, the segments g under the action of centrifugal force press back the sleeve j into the position shown, and, when the speed falls, the projection again enters the recess. The sleeve j may be engaged by a hand-lever in order that the clutch may be disengaged when desired or may not be restrained bv the sleeve j. Levers s with adjustable ends w are pivoted on the adjustable collar o, and are connected by a diaphragm u which may be held in the position shown by a screw v, or may be released to move the levers into position to to prevent the sleeve j from being pressed back.
