Abstract

Clutches, friction.-In Weston plate clutches, flexible wires or springs R connect the driving fly-wheel 1 to a plate a loose on the driven shaft K and carrying pins q on which slide plates a<1>, a<11> alternating with plates b, b<1> turning with the shaft K. A spring n bearing through a cup p and ball bearing x on the plate a<11> maintains clutch engagement, increase of load causing the plate a to lag behind the fly-wheel so that the inclination of the wires &c. R produces compression of the spring n and tightens the clutch grip. The clutch is disengaged by a sliding collar f engaging through cross keys c, d and a central pin y with the bearing x. Springs m between the plates a, b facilitate disengagement.
