Abstract
1384704 Klystrons EMI-VARIAN Ltd 5 April 1972 [14 April 1971 10 Feb 1972] 9399/71 and 6221/72 Heading HID A plane electrode is maintained in position in, and spaced from the envelope of, a discharge tube by limbs coplanar with the electrode and extending to the envelope, at least one of the limbs being maintained under pressure by a closure member for an aperture through which the limb can be removed, this limb being held in compression against the reaction of at least one of the other limbs. As described, the component is a lens electrode in a klystron, and may be in the form of an annulus 16, Fig. 2, supported by a pair of hollow insulators 17, and a conductive rod 18 which constitutes the lead and is screwed into a stud 23 formed on the electrode. Insulators 17 are similarly screwed over threaded members 21, their outer ends being a sliding fit in tubes 24 which are hermetically sealed at 24a and 25a, the radially compressed closure members 25 applying pressure to the insulators 17 via stainless steel spacers 26. A defective insulator may be replaced by breaking the weld 25a, and temporarily supporting the electrode by a rod passed down the bore of the insulator. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4, the electrode 36 is mounted in a tortuous insulator 35 by the engagement, by rotation of the electrode, of tongues 38 in a peripheral groove of the electrode, insulator 35 being urged against the plug 44 by the spring 50. In a further embodiment (Fig. 9, not shown) similar to that of Fig. 4, the supporting insulator has three tortuous limbs, the conductive rod which constitutes the electrode lead being urged inwards by its hermetic seal; and in one (Fig. 8, not shown) similar to that of Fig. 7, the insulator 56 protrudes into an hermetically sealed tube 62 at each end, and a screw for applying an adjustable pressure to the boss 65 of the sealing member is provided at each end.
