Abstract

1382146 Electric couplings KEARNEY NATIONAL Inc 8 March 1972 [9 Sept 1971] 10861/72 Heading H2E In an elbow connector a wire receiving sleeve 5 is connected to a contact pin 4 by an aluminium alloy block 9, the assembly being enclosed in a housing (1, Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) of yielding insulating material. The sleeve 6 has a thin shank 7 at one end which fits loosely in a hole 8 in the block 9. The pin has a threaded portion 10 which is screwed into a second hole in the block 9 until the end 11 abuts tightly against the shank 7. When the pin 4 is screwed tight the friction acts over an area nearer the axis than in prior art devices where a shoulder (corresponding to 26) abuts the surface of the shank. Less torque is therefore required to tighten the pin to a given contact force. The hole 8 stretches slightly, and the elasticity of the block 9 thereafter maintains constant contact force despite movements due to temperature changes. The block 9 is square and is forced into a complementary cavity in the housing (1) with the aid of a tool (T1, Fig. 4, not shown) temporarily screwed into it in place of the pin. A groove G engages a ridge in the housing to prevent movement. The pin 4 is screwed into the block with a tool (T2, Fig. 5, not shown) comprising a piece of stiff wire with one end fitting a hole 20 in the pin. The pin 4 has an insulating end 14. The sleeve 5 is clamped or crimped to the wire 2. Before the pin 4 is screwed tight the connector is rotated relative to the sleeve 5 and wire 2 to align the pin 4 with a fixed terminal.
