Abstract

137,642. Thomas, G. H., and Wilkinson, G. S. Feb. 14, 1919, Motor power plant.-Two internal-combustion engines driving an aircraft propeller are connected to the propeller shaft through helical gearing, in each case with a member capable of sliding under the end thrust of the gearing but normally balanced; if either engine fails to develop a certain minimum of power, the corresponding member slides out of engagement, and the engine ceases to drive. The propeller shaft A carries a sliding hub C with helical wheels C<1>, C<2> gearing with helical wheels D<1>, D<2> on the separate engine shafts. An adjustable resistance to determine the maximum permissible variation is provided by spring buffers F<1>, F<2> and a stirrup-lever E. Notches h<1>, h<2> may be arranged to coact with a spring catch and retain either engine out of action. To prevent damage through the breaking of a tooth, the pairs of helical elements are separated by a partition J.
