Abstract

137,429. Smith, E. E. March 15, 1919. Parachutes. - In order to reduce the shock to which a parachute and the load carried thereby are subjected in the event of the parachute having opened to a large area before the rigging cords are pulled taut by the falling load, a ligature is provided for restricting the opening of the parachute until the load pulls on the rigging cords sufficiently to break, stretch, or otherwise release the ligature. Fig. 1 shows a ligature 1 secured around the mouth 2 of a parachute: or the ligature may be attached higher up the body of the parachute, or around the rigging cords 4. The ligature may be of cotton, worsted, thread, india-rubber, &c.: or it may be in the form of a spring clip 6, 7, as shown in Fig. 4, encircling the rigging 4; or it may be of inextensible material the ends of which are connected together by a spring clip. The invention is specially applicable to the type of parachute described in Specification 131,659.
